Obviously if we are going to try and play out a whole game online, through a forum format, then it's worth setting out how to do that: this is the purpose of this post.
Q: How does the GM tell me what is going on?
The very simple answer is that the GM does exactly that: they type into the thread, and tell you: where you are, who/what you can see/smell/taste/feel and so on. So, in essence, they set the scene that way: through descriptive forum posts.
Q: How do I do stuff as a character?
This is now easy to explain - since you basically do the same. Type in what you try to do, what you say etc. Be descriptive, it makes for a better atmosphere and makes it more fun. The one exception to it being more or less the same as what the GM does is that you shouldn't put in the consequences of the things you try and do, e.g. you might try and shoot someone, but don't say whether or not you hit them. That's for the GM.
Q: How do I do stuff out of character?
Just put in brackets or italics [OOC: then whatever you want to say out of character] or post in the OOC thread.
Q: How do I do dicerolls?
invisiblecastle.com/roller/
use this, and then copy and paste the link into thread or post as an OOC thing - that way the GM can simply follow the link and check what you rolled. Easy.
Q: How do we get handouts and clues?
The GM will either copy/paste them into the thread or upload them somewhere and link to them. If everyone in the party has access to them they will stick them into a handout thread for the adventure.
Q: Can I see an example of this in action?
Yeah have a look at some of the running or completed games at www.callofcthulhu.org.uk/
